Overview
Masuda is a small city of roughly 50,000 people in western Shimane Prefecture, best known as the birthplace of Kakinomoto Hitomaro, one of Japan's earliest famous poets. The city serves as a quiet base for exploring Sesshu-related temple sites and Hikimi Gorge, one of the most scenic areas in Shimane Prefecture, making it a worthwhile stop for culture and nature travelers passing through the San'in region.

Connectivity
Masuda follows Japan's standard 100V power system with Type A/B plugs. SIM cards and pocket WiFi are available from major carriers but coverage in rural Hikimi Gorge may be limited.
Money
Japan is largely cash-based in rural areas like Masuda. Carry sufficient yen for temple admissions, meals, and local transport. Credit cards may only be accepted at larger hotels.
Transport
Masuda Station is the main transit hub. Taxis are plentiful in front of the station, and local buses connect temple sites. Driving offers the most flexibility for visiting Hikimi Gorge.
