Check current travel details
The guides, maps, games and budgets are there to help you plan. Prices are estimates, routes can change, and a good month on paper can still be a wet one. Check current fares, services, entry rules and local conditions before you travel. The atlas cannot guarantee them.
The app is in development
The website is available now. The app for iPhone, iPad and Mac is in development; the features described here are plans for its release. We’ll publish its final details and any changes to these terms when it launches.
No account required.
There is no Backpacker Index account. The website saves postcard progress in your browser. The app is designed to keep your trips, journal and photos on your device, with optional sync through your own iCloud. Your notes and photos remain yours.
You control that data. Clearing browser storage removes saved game progress. Keep a copy of anything you want to retain before removing an app or erasing a device. See Privacy for the details.
Purchases go through Apple.
When the app is released, any app purchases will go through Apple. The App Store will show the price and purchase terms before you pay. Apple handles payment and refund requests under its own policies. There are no app purchases on this website.
Partner links are labelled.
If a link can earn us a commission, we’ll label it as a partner link. Following one takes you to another company’s service. Check its prices and terms before booking; that company handles your purchase and support.
Reuse with the right credit.
Guide text adapted from Wikivoyage is shared under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0. You can reuse it under that licence, including its credit, change-notice and share-alike requirements. Our sources page explains the adaptations.
Photographs have their own licences. Follow the licence and original source linked in each photo credit; a guide’s text licence does not cover its pictures. The image credits collect them in one place.
Keep it usable for everyone.
Read, play, link to a guide and reuse licensed material. Please don’t interfere with the site or pass off someone else’s work as your own. Nothing here takes away rights you have under applicable law.
When these terms change.
We’ll update this page and its date when the terms change. Read it again before making a purchase or using a new service.
