How we handle your data

No account required

You won’t need a Backpacker Index account to use the app. Your journal, trips and photos belong on your device, where you control them.

Optional iCloud sync

The app will offer optional sync for trips, journal entries and photos through your own iCloud account. Sync needs a connection. You can keep the data on one device instead.

Website cookies and tracking

This website uses no cookies, advertising trackers or analytics scripts. Fonts, plates and game data come from this site, without third-party runtime requests. Visiting an external source or license link takes you to that provider’s site.

Postcard progress in this browser

The daily game saves your guesses in this browser’s local storage so you can come back to the same puzzle. It sends no guesses to a server. Clearing this site’s browser data removes that progress. If storage is unavailable, you can still play; progress will last only while the page is open.

Cookieless analytics.

There is no analytics service active on this version of the site. Any future audience measurement will be cookieless, without cross-site tracking. This page will explain any change before it starts.

No mailing list.

There is no signup form or newsletter. We’ll post app release news on the app page.

When the app arrives.

These are the principles guiding the upcoming app. Its final privacy details, including optional sync, will be published here at launch.
