Overview
Hida Furukawa is a small traditional town in northern Gifu Prefecture, often compared to a miniature version of nearby Takayama. The town preserves a historic district with wooden merchant houses and narrow canals, offering an authentic glimpse of old Japan without the crowds of larger destinations.

Limited lodging in Hida Furukawa itself; budget option is the Youth Hostel at ¥5,400/night. Most visitors stay in Takayama and make this a day trip.
Festivals
The Furukawa Matsuri takes place April 19-20 annually and is one of Japan's three most beautiful float festivals. Book accommodation well in advance if visiting during this period.
Museums
The Furukawa Matsuri Museum (¥800 adults) and Hida no Takumi Museum (¥300 adults) are open March-November 09:00-17:00, reduced hours December-February.
Transport
JR Hida Furukawa Station on the Takayama Line connects to Takayama (15 min) and Gero Onsen (50 min). Express trains from Nagoya require a transfer at Takayama.
Weather
Winter brings heavy snow to the region; some attractions have shorter hours December-February. Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather for sightseeing.
