Why go?

Toyama is the capital of Toyama prefecture, a compact coastal city on the Sea of Japan with excellent public transport and fewer crowds than major tourist hubs. The city is famous for its glass art museum, sake production, and proximity to the Japan Alps, including Mount Tate and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. It's an ideal base for exploring the Noto Peninsula and Hida region while enjoying local specialties like masuzushi (circular salmon sushi) and quality street food around the station and Sogawa arcade.

Get in

Toyama Airport is 20 minutes south of the city center with flights to Shanghai, Seoul, Vladivostok, Dalian, Tokyo, Sapporo, and Fukuoka (seasonal schedules vary). Airport buses cost ¥420 and take 25 minutes to the city center. JR Toyama Station serves the Hokuriku Shinkansen (to Kanazawa and Nagano), JR Takayama Main Line (to Gifu and Hida), and Ainokaze Toyama Railway. The Hokuriku Shinkansen connects Toyama to Tokyo in about 2 hours.

Get around

Central Toyama is compact and walkable from the station. The Toyama City Tram Line (Shiden 市電) operates from Dentetsu Toyama Station with three routes: a downtown loop, one south, and one west. The Portram light rail (Toyamakō Line) runs north from Toyama-eki-kita to the seaport and Iwase Beach. Toyama Chihō Railway (Chitetsu) runs lines east along the coast, southeast toward Tateyama, and south via Fujikoshi-Kamidaki Line. A good bus system complements the trams.

When to go

Spring (cherry blossom season) is peak time for the Matsukawa River Cruises when boats charge extra for blossom viewing. Summer festivals include Toyama Matsuri (first weekend of August with fireworks) and Yosakoi dance festival (late July/early August). Kaze no Bon in early September in Yatsuo town features lantern-lit streets and traditional dance. Winter offers a quieter experience with fewer tourists and comfortable museum visits.
