Why go?

Takayama is famous for its well-preserved quarter with Edo-style streets. Sometimes called 'Little Kyoto of Hida', the traditional townscape is a major attraction, rivalled only by Kanazawa in the Chubu region. The city also boasts a humid continental climate with snowy winters and warm summers, offering a distinct seasonal charm.

When to go

Takayama has a humid continental climate with large temperature variations, ranging from 0°C in winter to 35°C in summer. Winter brings constant snowfall, sometimes below -10°C. The famous Sannō Matsuri spring festival (April 14-15) and Yahata Matsuri autumn festival (October 9-10) are major draws, but accommodation should be booked well in advance.

Getting in

Takayama is the major transport hub of the Hida region, served by the JR Takayama Line with spectacular valley views. The station does not accept IC cards, so local line tickets must be bought with cash. Buses connect to Shirakawa-go and other destinations. From Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Toyama and transfer to the local train.

Getting around

Takayama is small enough to cover on foot, but bicycle rental (¥600 per day from the youth hostel) is also a good option. The old town (Sanmachi) is a 10-minute walk east of the station.

Where to stay

Takayama has more traditional-style accommodation than Western hotels, offering opportunities to experience a ryokan or temple stay. Room rates are advertised per person. Budget options include the Hida Takayama Tenshōji youth hostel (¥3,400-3,700/night) and Temple Hotel Zenkoji (from ¥4,000). Mid-range hotels like Best Western Takayama and Hida Hotel Plaza are also available near the station.

Food and drink

Takayama is famous for its ramen noodles in miso broth, hōba miso (miso grilled on a magnolia leaf), and Hida beef steak. Restaurants like Sakaguchiya offer good-value hōba miso steak, while Agura serves Western-style pizza (¥800-1,500). Bars include Desolation Row (whiskey bar) and the nameless 'Doya' (drinks up to ¥700).

Things to do

Explore the Hida Folk Village (¥700), an open-air museum with traditional thatched-roof houses. Visit the Takayama Jinya (¥420), a preserved Edo-period government building. Stroll through Sanmachi's narrow lanes with sake breweries and boutiques. The Higashiyama Walking Course (3.5 km) passes temples and the castle ruins. Don't miss the Miyagawa Morning Market (daily 07:00 to mid-morning). Takayama is also known for its sarubobo amulets, Shunkei lacquerware, and wood block prints.
