Overview

Tsavo East National Park is one of Kenya's oldest and largest parks, offering a raw, undeveloped safari experience that contrasts sharply with more polished destinations. The park's drier, more barren landscape means wildlife is easier to spot — elephants, lions, leopards, and buffalo roam the red-earth plains in significant numbers.

Before you go

Connectivity

Mobile phone coverage is limited inside the park. Safaris typically operate with satellite communication for emergencies. WiFi unavailable inside the park. Consider offline maps and downloaded content for the journey.

Health

Malaria prophylaxis recommended year-round. Yellow fever vaccination required for entry to Kenya from endemic countries. Carry basic first-aid supplies — medical facilities inside the park are minimal. Drink plenty of water during game drives.

Money

Park fees paid via smartcard system (loadable at Voi Gate or Nairobi/Mombasa KWS offices). Carry Kenyan shillings for tips, drinks, and purchases in Voi town. ATMs limited in Voi — withdraw in Mombasa or Nairobi before the trip.

Transport

Safari operators offer the most practical access from Mombasa (4-5 hour drive) or Nairobi (6-7 hours). Public transport to Voi town exists but requires additional vehicle hire to reach the gate. Charter flights land at Kilaguni (Tsavo West) for combined park visits.

Weather

Peak heat from January to March (up to 35°C). Long rains March–May make dirt roads impassable. Best wildlife viewing August–September. Short rains October–December are generally manageable for safaris.
