Get in

Malindi is accessible by road from Mombasa (approximately two hours north along the coast). The town can be reached via the A14 road connecting to Lamu. Most travelers arrive by bus or private vehicle from Mombasa or other coastal destinations.

Get around

Local transport in Malindi includes tuk-tuks (three-wheeled taxis) at Ksh 200 per journey, motorbike taxis (boda boda) at Ksh 100, and regular taxis for safer nighttime travel. Bicycle boda bodas offer a cheaper and greener option but are being replaced by motorbike taxis. Walking is also feasible in the town center.

When to go

The best time to visit Malindi is during the dry seasons from June to October and December to February. May to October offers good surfing conditions north of Eden Roc. The town attracts Italian tourists year-round, with peak season coinciding with European summer holidays.

Where to stay

Accommodation in Malindi is not expensive, with guest houses recommended for budget travelers. Options range from basic guesthouses like Tana Guest House (from Ksh 800) and Sun Park Hotel (single Ksh 1000, double Ksh 1200) to mid-range hotels like Young Safari Hotel (from Ksh 1500) and Golanis Hotel (Ksh 1500). Many hotels along Silversand Road cater to different budgets.

Food and drink

Malindi offers diverse dining with Italian, seafood, and African options. Popular restaurants include I Love Pizza (Seafront Rd) for reasonably priced pizzas and seafood, Driftwood Beach Club for Sunday curry lunches overlooking the Indian Ocean, and Papa Remo for Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. The town has several nightclubs including Club 28, Pata Pata Beach Club (known for live music), and Fermento Disco Bar.

Things to do

Beach activities include scuba diving and snorkeling (best near Jacaranda Beach Resort in Watamu), surfing (north of Eden Roc from May to October), and kitesurfing (school north of town). The Vasco da Gama Pillar marks where the explorer landed in 1498. Malindi Museum Society, along the seafront near the jetty, features the famous Malindi Coelacanth exhibit. The Portuguese chapel on Silversand Road, built in 1498, is the oldest Portuguese sanctuary in East Africa.

Shopping in Malindi Town can be stressful due to traffic congestion, while Watamu offers a more relaxed experience. There is a curio (tourist) market near the pier and a main market in the old town selling foodstuffs. Oasis Mall on Lamu Road has many stores and a large supermarket. For banking, Equity Bank and I & M Bank on Lamu Road offer no-fee Mastercard ATMs, while Barclays and Standard Chartered charge Ksh 399 for overseas cards.

Connect

Most hotels offer WiFi, often only at the front desk. For independent access, three Kenyan network providers are available: Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom. Airtel's main store is on Lamu Road. Both Airtel and Telkom offer 10 GB data packages valid for 30 days at Ksh 1000. A Kenyan SIM card requires passport registration and is worthwhile for frequent calls home or business.
