Overview
Putre is a small high-altitude village at 3,500 m (11,483 ft) that serves as the main gateway and acclimatization point for visitors to Lauca National Park. The town sits in the shadow of the Taapaca volcanic complex and offers colonial architecture, alpaca wool shopping, and access to thermal hot springs.

Altitude
Putre sits at 3,500-3,550 m altitude. Altitude sickness is a genuine risk; spend 1-2 nights acclimatizing, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol initially, and consider mate de coca tea for symptom relief.
Connectivity
4G available from most carriers as of April 2025. Movistar tends to be faster than Claro. WiFi at accommodations is available but may be slow. Coverage extends partially into Lauca National Park.
Language
Spanish is the local language. Some Quechua or Aymara terms may be heard. English is limited outside of tour operations.
Money
Chilean pesos (CLP) are used throughout Putre. ATMs may be limited, so withdraw cash in Arica before traveling. Major credit cards are accepted at some hotels and restaurants but not universally.
Safety
Minefields exist in border areas near Putre. Stay on marked trails and roads when hiking. Discuss off-track plans with locals or authorities before departing.
Transport
Most visitors arrive from Arica (130 km) by bus or car. Within Putre, everything is walkable. Tours with local operators like Mr. Oriolf or Terrace Lodge are the main option for regional day trips.
Weather
High plateau climate with cool summers (rarely above 20°C) and freezing night temperatures in autumn/winter. Rainy season runs December through March. Dress in layers and bring warm clothing even in summer.
