Before you go
Accommodation
Limited options inside the park. Hostal Uta Kala in Parinacota requires 72-hour advance booking. Most visitors stay in Putre and enter as a day trip.
Altitude
The park sits at 4,500m elevation. Acclimatize in Putre or Arica for 2-3 days before visiting. Symptoms of altitude sickness can affect even fit travelers.
Connectivity
No mobile coverage in most of the park. Satellite communication recommended for extended stays. Stock up on supplies in Putre or Arica.
Food
Bring all food and water. Restaurants are scarce, often closed, and have limited hours. Doña Vicky on the highway serves breakfast and lunch only until early afternoon.
Safety
Altitude sickness is the primary risk. Remote location means limited emergency services. Vehicle breakdowns on the highway can leave you stranded for hours.
Transport
Public buses between Arica and La Paz pass through the park. No public transit within the park itself. Hire a vehicle or join a tour from Putre.
Weather
Layered clothing is essential year-round. Nights freeze even in summer. Wind chill makes midday feel much colder than indicated temperatures.
