Understand
Nkob is the capital village of the Berber Ait Atta tribe, whose territory stretches across Ouarzazate, Errachidia, and Azil Provinces. The Amazigh Ait Atta are an ancient Berber tribe that existed before Arab and Islamic arrival in Morocco in the 7th century. The tribe was the most important Moroccan tribe between the 15th and 19th centuries.

Getting In
Nkob lies on the road between Ouarzazate and Tazzarine, connecting Marrakech to Erg Chebbi Dunes in Merzouga. The village is accessible by shared taxis and buses running between these regional centers. No direct public transit serves Nkob directly; travelers typically transit through Ouarzazate or Tazzarine.

Nkob village and its two surrounding oases can be easily explored on foot. The old village with its historic kasbahs is compact and walkable. For reaching surrounding attractions like the Saghrou Mountains or Erg Chebbi Dunes, local guides and drivers can be arranged.

Where to Stay
Nkob offers several traditional guesthouses and kasbah accommodations. Hotel Kasbah Ennakhile provides rooms from 160-300 dirham including dinner and breakfast, located on the road out toward Tazzarine. Tigmi Nkob Chez l'Habitant on La'aoun Street offers single rooms at 300 dirham and doubles at 500 dirham, both including breakfast and dinner. Auberge Ouadjou near the Ziz Petrol Station has doubles at 240 dirham and singles at 130 dirham, with camping car space available.

Food and Drink
Traditional Berber cuisine is available at local establishments. Restaurant Merzouga opposite the weekly market serves authentic homemade food cooked over wood fire for around 50 dirham per person, prepared by Mrs. Fatima. Restaurant Station ZiZ at Ziz Gaz Station offers tajines, couscous, brochettes, and typical Berber soup from 07:00-midnight Monday to Saturday. For a truly local experience, Homemade Berber Food on La'aoun Street serves lunch from noon to 15:00 and dinner from 20:00 to 22:00 at 100 dirham per person, limited to 10 guests and requiring advance booking.

Things to Do
Nkob Market (souk) is held Friday for animal trading and Saturday-Sunday for local produce and goods, representing the second largest market in Zagora Province. Mountain trekking in the Saghrou Mountains offers wilderness experiences, with 5-day treks from Dades Valley to Nkob available at 400 dirham per person per day including all costs. The old village contains immense historic kasbahs worth exploring, with opportunities to enter traditional houses for panoramic views of the region.

Buy
Nkob weekly market is a major regional shopping destination. The region produces Morocco's finest henna powder, available at shops on the main street for 10 dirham per 200g, and directly from local families who cultivate henna plantations. Ait Atta Shoes from Mr. Oufafa sells high-quality handmade leather sandals near the Dohou supermarket for 120-150 dirham. Nkob is also known for organically grown almonds, and many shops on the main street sell Berber women's cosmetics and clothing.

Go Next
Nkob is situated on the southern route connecting Marrakech to the Sahara. Erg Chebbi Dunes lie just 35km from Erfoud, offering dramatic orange-colored dunes. Erfoud serves as the entrance town to the dunes and a good place to purchase supplies before entering the open desert. Rissani features a museum, Alaouite King Mausoleum, and impressive central market. Merzouga sits directly on the edge of Erg Chebbi Dunes. Ouarzazate, called the capital of the south, marks the transition from oases to Sahara Desert.
