Why go?
Tinerhir (Tinghir) is a traditional Amazigh oasis town in Morocco's High Atlas region, best known as the gateway to the spectacular Todra Gorge. With a population of about 42,000 and an elevation of 1,300 m, it offers a cooler, quieter alternative to Marrakech for travelers seeking mountain trails, Berber culture, and desert access. Get in
Tinerhir is serviced by local buses. From Ouarzazate, daily buses depart from the gare routière for 60 MAD. If your bus continues past Tinerhir's gare routière, ask the driver to stop in town center rather than the bus station to save walking distance.

Get around
Tinerhir itself is walkable, with the town center, bus drop-off points, and main restaurants along Avenue Hassan II and Boulevard Mohamed V. Grand taxis (shared taxis) operate from the main taxi stand for trips to Todra Gorge, costing around 8 dirhams per ride. The gorge is about 10 km north of town.

When to go
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the best temperatures for hiking Todra Gorge and exploring the oasis. Summers can be hot in the valley (30°C+) but the gorge's narrow walls provide shade. Winters are cold at elevation but crowds thin significantly. The area is predominantly Muslim; dress modestly and respect prayer times.

Where to stay
The Oasis Hotel is the standout budget option, located very close to where buses drop passengers off. Staff speak English and can help plan gorge trips and mountain adventures. The rooftop offers stunning mountain views and is a social hub for tea and meeting locals. Beds are basic and bathrooms can be smelly, but at budget prices this is the best value in town. Several other hostels and hotels exist in and around Tinerhir for different comfort levels.

Food and drink
Local restaurants cluster along Avenue Hassan II and Boulevard Mohamed V. Restaurant Cafe Central at 48 Avenue Hassan II serves standard Moroccan fare. Restaurant Cafe Oasis Rose and Marmara Palace both on Boulevard Mohamed V offer similar local menus. Snack Food on the same boulevard provides quick bites. Typical Moroccan meals (tagine, couscous) run 30-50 MAD. Moroccan mint tea is ubiquitous and costs 10-15 MAD.

Things to do
The main draw is Todra Gorge: take a grand taxi (8 MAD) up to the gorge, then walk past the last hotels into the narrow section. From there, follow the donkey trail up the riverbed to the first saddle, turn left, and descend to a small Berber encampment—the full loop takes 2-3 hours. Cairns mark the route; look for donkey dung if lost. Back in town, walk through the old Jewish quarter and the Palmerie (oasis). Across the river, visit the old Mosque Ikalalne via a well-marked path through an old Kasbah. Climbing and via ferrata are available in the gorge.

Safety
Tinerhir is generally safe for travelers. Standard precautions apply: secure valuables, avoid isolated areas after dark, and be cautious on mountain trails. The gorge's via ferrata and climbing require proper equipment and experience. Tap water is not recommended for drinking; bottled water is widely available.

Connectivity
Moroccan SIM cards (Maroc Telecom, Orange, Inwi) are available in Tinerhir for data and calls. WiFi is common in hotels and cafes. Power plugs use Type E/C sockets at 220V, common European compatibility.

Budget
Tinerhir is very affordable for backpackers. Budget 200-300 MAD per day covering dorm beds (80-150 MAD), basic meals (60-100 MAD), grand taxi rides (8-20 MAD), and activities. The gorge hike is free; climbing instruction costs extra. Transport from Ouarzazate is 60 MAD.

Day trips
Todra Gorge is the primary day trip from Tinerhir. Ouarzazate (2-3 hours by bus) is the nearest major city, known for its film studios and Kasbah Taourirt. The Dades Valley and Rose Valley offer scenic drives and village walks. Boumalne Dades makes a good overnight base for the Dades Gorge.
