Why go?
Kalaw is a compact, walkable hill station built by the British at 1,320 m, offering cool mountain air and a relaxed colonial-era atmosphere. It serves as the classic starting point for the multi-day trek across the Shan Hills to Inle Lake, one of Myanmar's premier backpacking routes. The town itself has a bustling central market, tea shops, and a hilltop monastery with town views, making it worthwhile even without the trek.

Get in
Buses arrive from Inle Lake (start around 15:00, ask at guesthouses or travel companies for timing), Taunggyi, Yangon (night bus, VIP class 20,000-25,000 kyat), and Bagan (5-6 hr journey). The Central Bus Stop sits on the main road near Shwe Nan San travel agency, which sells tickets and offers luggage storage for 1,000 kyat per bag per day. Buses may arrive earlier than the promised time, especially late night arrivals.

Get around
Kalaw is small enough to cover entirely on foot; the market, monastery, and most guesthouses are within a 10-minute walk of each other. Bikes are available for hire from mid-morning onward at the mosque near the town center. The Thein Taung Monastery sits on a hill to the north and is reached via a 'stairway to heaven' staircase.

See
The Kalaw Central Market is the focal point of the town, surrounded by street food stalls in the evening. The Thein Taung Monastery (သိမ်တောင် ဘုန်းကြီးကျောင်း) sits atop a hill north of town via a striking staircase and offers panoramic views over Kalaw. The surrounding hills and trekking trails provide scenic mountain landscapes.

Do
Trekking is the primary activity: the classic route runs 3-5 days from Kalaw to Inle Lake, passing through ethnic Shan and Pa-O villages, pine forests, and farmland. Sam's Family Trekking Company operates popular multi-day treks and has an associated restaurant. Day hikes to nearby caves and the hilltop monastery are also possible. Bikes can be used for local exploration.

Buy
The central market is the main shopping area. Local specialties include Myanmar 'cigars' (cheroots) and peanut brittle. Material for a longyi (sarong-style garment) can be purchased and local tailors near the bus offices will sew or modify garments inexpensively. Green trekking boots are widely available in the market for 3,000 kyat per pair—good tread and popular even among local guides. Rain coats cost around 5,000 kyat.

Eat
Street food stands ring the central market, especially active in the evening; look for plater (savory pancakes). Thirigayha Restaurant (also called Seven Sisters) on Pyi Taung Su Road serves Burmese fare with mains from 2,000-4,500 kyat and fragrant coconut rice. Pyae Pyae Shan Noodle next door offers a standout clay hot pot (2,500 kyat) served sizzling with omelette, quail's egg, chicken, and vegetables, plus tea leaf salad at 500 kyat—uniquely non-spicy.

Drink
Tea shops surround the central market, serving as social hubs throughout the day. The Hi Bar (ကလောဈေး) on Aung Tha Pyay St opposite Aung Chan Tha Pagoda operates 13:00-21:00 and draws locals eager to play guitar and English songs. Cocktails include Rum Sour and Whisky Sour; the bar has a donation box for the local hospital.

Where to stay
Kalaw has a high density of guesthouses and small hotels—almost every house offers lodging. Options are plentiful in low season but book ahead during high season as popular places fill quickly. Pine Land Inn, situated almost opposite the stairs to Thein Taung Hpaya, offers rooms from US$6 (single) with singles/doubles/multi-rooms available with or without bathroom; heating may be limited but blankets are provided. Many travelers arrive on overnight buses and find hotel owners willing to accommodate late arrivals, often at reduced rates.

Safety
Kalaw is officially malaria-free according to local reports, but mosquitoes are common especially during the rainy season (roughly May-October). Cover up and use repellent to avoid bites regardless. The town is generally safe for walking day and night; standard urban precautions apply.
