Overview

Taunggyi is the capital of Shan State and one of Myanmar's most high cities, sitting at over 1,400 meters above sea level. The town comes alive each November during the spectacular Fire Balloon Festival when thousands of paper balloons lit by open flames are launched into the night sky.

Hotels in downtown Taunggyi are reasonably priced normally ($40 Golden Fish Hotel), but the Fire Balloon Festival drives rates up 50%. Monasteries offer free accommodation if asking the abbot.

Events

The Fire Balloon Festival occurs for one week near early November. Book accommodation months ahead as the town fills and prices surge.

Food

Shan noodles are the local must-try dish. Green tea is freely offered at tea shops and monasteries. Budget 3,000-5,000 kyat per meal at market stalls.

Shopping

Surplus military gear from the Tatmadaw is sold at the central market. Tank tops 1,000 kyat, bags 4,500 kyat, bedsheets 3,000 kyat.

Transport

Express buses from major cities cost no more than 20,000 kyat. Within town, walking is the main option as taxis and rentals are scarce.
