Zalaszentgrót is a small thermal bath town in Zala County, first documented in 1247 and high to town status in 1984. The Szent Gróth Thermal Bath opened in 2001, drawing visitors seeking relaxation. The town serves as a base for exploring surrounding villages—Kehidakustány, Kallósd, Türje, and Kisgörbő—each with historic churches and cultural sites. Ferenc Deák, known as "The Wise Man of the Nation," lived in Kehidakustány from 1808 to 1854, and his memorial house is a highlight nearby.

Getting in

The nearest train station is Zalabér-Batyk Train Station, about 6 km from town center—tickets must be purchased on the train as there is no ticket office. Zalaszentgrót Bus Station is centrally located at Kinizsi tér 3, with ticket office open Monday to Friday 05:30–16:30. Regional buses operated by Volánbusz (volanbusz.hu/en) connect to Lake Balaton resorts like Gyenesdiás (32 km southeast), Hévíz thermal town (24 km south), and county capital Zalaegerszeg (31 km west).

Get around

There is no local public transport or taxi service within Zalaszentgrót. Regional buses operated by Volánbusz serve the town and surrounding villages including Kehidakustány, Türje, Zalaszentlászló, and Kisgörbő. The town center is walkable. A car is helpful for visiting outlying sites like the Saint Anne Round Church in Kallósd or the Observation Tower in Zalaköveskút.

Surrounding villages

Kehidakustány (12 km) houses the Ferenc Deák Memorial House (Kúria utca 8), open April–October Tuesday–Saturday 10:00–19:00, Sundays 10:00–14:00—Deák lived here 1808–1854. Gothic Church Ruins and Deák Well are nearby. Kallósd (15 km) preserves the Saint Anne Round Church built around 1260—one of few Árpád Age round churches with Romanesque brick on stone base. Türje (18 km) features a Norbertine Monastery built 1779 and a Romanesque church from around 1230 with Baroque interior and Saint Ladislaus legend mural.
