Understand
The Zalaegerszeg area shows evidence of Upper Paleolithic habitation, with the oldest archaeological findings in Zala County. Celtic tribes later inhabited the region. The first written mentions of the town appear as Egerscug (1247) and Egerszeg (1293). The name means 'alder-tree corner' and likely refers to the town's position at the confluence of two rivers. The city was built at the angle where two rivers meet, giving it both its name and its historic layout.
