Why Go?

Keszthely is the oldest town in the Lake Balaton region with over 750 years of history. The town centers on the magnificent Festetics Palace, one of Hungary's largest Baroque palaces with 111 halls and a stunning two-level library housing over 100,000 volumes including manuscripts by Haydn and Pleyel. The pedestrianized Kossuth Lajos street connects the main square to the palace, lined with restaurants serving alfresco diners in season. A highlight is Helikon Park between town and lake, where summer evenings fill with locals eating langos (deep-fried potato pancakes with garlic or cheese) and drinking beer at outdoor cafes.

Understand

The Festetics family were among Hungary's wealthiest aristocrats, founding pharmacies, hospitals, and in 1779 establishing The Georgikon, Europe's first independent agricultural higher education institution with an 11-hectare dendrological garden. Count György Festetics played a decisive role in the town's development. The palace obtained its final Neo-Baroque form in 1887 and was miraculously saved from WWII destruction. The town's architectural gems display Gothic, Baroque, Transylvanian, and Eclectic styles, with the center organized around a large square alongside Kossuth Lajos street.
