Why go?
Hévíz is a spa town built around the world's second-largest natural thermal lake, where water temperatures range from 24°C even on the coldest winter days to 37°C in summer, making year-round bathing possible. The town offers a slower pace than Budapest with Roman-era bathing heritage, nearby vineyards in Egregy for wine tasting, and easy access to Lake Balaton resort villages. It's ideal for wellness-focused travelers seeking therapeutic hot springs, nature lovers exploring the moorland trail around the lake, and those wanting to experience traditional Hungarian spa culture without crowds.

Getting in
Hévíz has no direct international train station; the nearest major rail hub is in Keszthely (8 km west) with connections from Budapest's Déli pályaudvar (3-4 hours). Regional Volánbusz coaches run from Budapest's Népliget bus station to Hévíz Bus Station, with ticket office open M-F 08:00-16:00, Sa-Su 08:30-15:30. The town is about 200 km southwest of Budapest via the M7 motorway. Taxis including Jäger Taxi, Hévíz Taxi, and Taxi Hévíz serve the area.

When to go
Hévíz is a year-round destination due to the thermal lake's constant temperatures. Summer (June-August) brings the warmest water (up to 37°C) and highest visitor numbers, plus festivals including the Wine Festival in August. Spring and fall offer milder crowds with pleasant temperatures for sightseeing. Winter is unique for bathing in 24°C water while surrounded by snow—a rare experience in Europe. Events include Carnival Fair (February), Happy Peace Times (May), Flavius Day (May), Angels and Thieves Art Festival (June), Farewell of Egregy (July), and Wine Festival (August).
