Why Go

Yeosu is a coastal city of 300,000 in South Jeolla province, consisting of a peninsula and 317 islands (49 inhabited). It gained international prominence as the host city for the 2012 World Expo in Yeosu Harbor and has since developed into an ocean resort destination. The city is famous for its illuminated nightviews across the water, black sand beaches, fresh seafood, and maritime heritage tied to Admiral Yi Sun-shin, who invented the turtle ship (Geobukseon) here to defend against the Japanese invasion of the 16th century.

When To Go

Yeosu has a mild oceanic climate with cool summers and mild winters, thanks to sea winds and warm currents. The city enjoys relatively longer springs and autumns compared to other Korean regions, making April-May and September-October ideal for visits. Summer (June-August) brings the warmest temperatures (22-29°C average highs) but also the liveliest beach season at Manseongri Black Sand Beach, Korea's only black sand beach.

Getting In

Yeosu Airport (여수공항) offers up to 8 daily flights between Gimpo Airport (Seoul) via Korean Air and Asiana Airlines. Korean Air also operates flights between Yeosu and Jeju on Fridays and Sundays. The airport has an information desk, convenience store, cafes, car rental, buses, and taxis. Travel time to downtown Yeosu (shinae) is up to one hour by car. Alternatively, intercity buses connect Yeosu to nearby cities including Mokpo, Gwangju, and Jinju.

Getting Around

The best way to navigate Yeosu's compact CBD is by taxi, as fares are cheap and distances are short. However, taxis are strongly discouraged when crossing Dolsan Bridge during rush hour, as the city experiences some of the worst traffic jams in Korea at this bottleneck. During such times, it may be optimal to walk across the bridge and catch a bus on the other side. Buses also serve the city but can be caught in significant delays at the bridge crossing.

Accommodation options in Yeosu range from budget to upscale. The Belagio Tourist Hotel (rooms from US$30) near Soho-dong yacht marina offers ocean views, while the Chambord Hotel (from US$60) in Konghwa-dong has a sky lounge though reviews note noisy rooms and weak water pressure. The Eastern Jewelry Hotel (from US$80) in Chungmu-dong and the Nobles Hotel in Hak-dong provide mid-range options with business amenities. For luxury, The Ocean Resort (from US$250) in Soho-dong offers condominium-style rooms overlooking the yacht marina with its own waterpark.

Rotary Restaurant serves Korean set meals at ₩10,000 with refills on side dishes. Miso Ssambap (미소쌈밥) in Yeoseodong is famous for jeyukbogeum (제육볶음), a marinated pork dish wrapped in lettuce with numerous side dishes. The city has several nightlife districts: Yeosu Downtown (Chungang-ro, Chinnamkwan) for bars and clubs; Yeoseo-dong for trendy cafes; Yeocheon downtown near the fire station for restaurants; Soho-dong along the yacht marina for cafes and seafood; and Dolsan Bridge area for romantic cafes with nightviews.
