Why Go?
Tongyeong is a coastal city of 192 islands in South Gyeongsang Province, celebrated for its ties to Admiral Yi Sun-sin and his naval victories during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592-1598). The city formerly bore his posthumous name, Chungmu, and the name Tongyeong itself means 'command post' - referring to his principal naval base on nearby Hansan Island. Visitors come for the picturesque harbor, fresh seafood, scenic ferry routes through Hallyeosudo (the island-dotted waterway), and cultural sites honoring this national hero.

When to Go
Tongyeong experiences mild coastal weather: winters are cold (January averages -0.8°C/7.9°C), while summers are warm and humid (August averages 23.4°C/29.6°C). The Gwang-do Hydrangea Festival takes place seasonally along Gwangdocheon Stream, featuring the Endless Summer hydrangea species. The Tongyeong International Music Festival (TIMF) commemorates composer I-sang Yun with performances throughout Hallyeosudo. For outdoor activities like cable car rides and island ferries, late spring through early autumn (May-October) offers the most comfortable conditions.
