Overview

Vis is the most distant inhabited Croatian island, less influenced by mass tourism than nearby Hvar. The island served as a hiding place for Tito during WWII and has been part of British, Venetian, Ottoman, Yugoslav, and Italian empires, creating a layered cultural heritage.
