Vilcabamba, meaning Sacred Valley, is a peaceful mountain town in southern Ecuador at roughly 1,500m elevation. The town is famous for its 'magic springwater' believed to contribute to exceptional longevity among locals. Surrounded by forested mountains and cloud forest, it serves as a gateway to Podocarpus National Park with excellent trekking, birding, and nature experiences. The laid-back atmosphere, affordable cost of living, and established expat community make it popular for longer stays and digital nomad visits.

Getting In

The main access is via the city of Loja, one hour away by bus. Buses from Loja run throughout the day through Transportes Loja. International buses arrive from Piura, Peru (10 hours, $10) on the Panamerican Highway, departing 3 times daily.
