Getting In

Buses connect Jaén to Chachapoyas (6:30am, 9am, 11am, 2pm, 3:30pm, 5:30pm daily) for 15 soles. Cross-border buses to Loja, Ecuador run daily via Nambija company, passing through the La Balsa border crossing with approximately 1 hour for migration procedures.

Get Around

Tuk-tuks are the primary form of motorized transport in Jaén. Flag one down and negotiate the fare before boarding—typically a few soles to most destinations within town. As of September 2025, Uber and similar ride-share services are not available. The area around Plaza de Armas can be explored comfortably on foot.

Go Next

From Jaén, direct buses to Chachapoyas depart six times daily (6:30am-5:30pm) for 15 soles, taking you toward the famous ruins of Kuelap. Cross-border buses to Loja, Ecuador operated by Nambija take approximately 10-11 hours with spectacular Andean views, though roads on the Ecuadorian side are unpaved and curvy. Cajamarca is also listed as a nearby destination.
