Overview

Trebinje is a small city in the Trebišnjica river valley in southeastern Herzegovina, about 30 km by road from Dubrovnik, Croatia. Called "the city of sun and plane trees," it is one of the most beautiful cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina and remains an authentic counterpoint to tourist-trapped Dubrovnik.

Before you go

Activities

Seven surrounding peaks with Austro-Hungarian fortresses offer excellent hiking (1.5-3.5 hours). Paragliding from Mount Leotar is fraction of Western prices. River beach (bazen) available in summer.

Culture

Trebinje retains authentic local life unlike tourist-saturated Dubrovnik. The Old Town still operates as a living neighborhood with mosques, cafes, and daily routines unchanged by tourism.

Food

Local ćevapčići is your go-to budget meal. Try Sarajevski Ćevap outside the South Gate or Kastel Trebinje inside the Old Town. Ice cream from Magistra near the West Gate is a local institution.

Transport

Trebinje is walkable—small enough to cross in 20 minutes. Bicycle rentals available from Adventure Trebinje (+387 65545070) or Hostel Polako. Buses run to Dubrovnik (30 km away) and Mostar to the north.

Wine

Herzegovina wine is excellent and cheap. Tastings at family wineries start from 10 KM including food. Zilavka (white) and Vranac (red) are the local specialties found in every cafe. Saturday market has the best homemade rakija selection.
