Tokushima is famous for indigo dyeing traditions, producing beautiful patterned handkerchiefs, scarves, cushions, and door-curtains. Otani-yaki pottery and handmade paper are also popular souvenirs.

The Awa Odori festival (August 12-15) is Tokushima's biggest event, attracting massive crowds who dance in the streets. Book accommodation well in advance during this period.
Food
Try local sudachi citrus (lime-flavored, used in shochu), strawberries, sugata sushi, and narutokintoki sweet potato. The 5th floor of Clement Plaza and nearby department stores have good food options.

Japan uses yen (JPY). Most establishments accept cards but smaller shops and markets may be cash-only. Budget approximately ¥3000-5000/day for comfortable backpacking.

Tokushima is the main transport hub for eastern Shikoku with JR station, airport, and ferry connections. The city is compact enough to explore on foot, with bike rental available near the station for ¥500/day.
