Why Go?

Tetebatu is the oldest tourist village in Central and East Lombok, sitting at 700-800 m above sea level in a scenic rural area. It offers a genuine alternative to the beer-boys scene in Senggigi, allowing visitors to experience authentic traditional Sasak village life, including artisan workshops, rice paddies, and cultural activities far from mass tourism.

Understand

Tetebatu lies about 2 km from the southern boundary of Mount Rinjani National Park. The area is known for traditional Sasak handicraft artisans producing black terracotta pottery and basketry. The nearby town of Kotaraja is Lombok's best-known location to witness traditional Sasak stick fighting (peresehan), and has a long tradition of forged blacksmith tool production.

Get In

Getting to Tetebatu by public transport is challenging and time-consuming. Buses from Mataram's main terminal go to Paokmotong (about 12 km south), most regular in late mornings. From Paokmotong, take a bemo to Kotaraja, then a horse cart (cidomo) for the final 2 km. Easier and affordable for groups is chartering a private car or taxi from West Lombok destinations for Rp 300,000-500,000. Perama bus reportedly offers one-way transfers from Senggigi for Rp 80,000 per person (confirmation needed).

Get Around

Horse carts (cidomos) are easily available for short journeys. For longer village excursions, bemo routes exist but can be difficult to figure out. More likely you'll hire a car with driver in town. Bicycles rent for about Rp 25,000/day and motorbikes for Rp 70,000/day and up. Your hotel can help arrange rentals.

Things to Do

Kotaraja (5 km south) hosts regular peresehan stick-fighting events where young Sasak men ceremonially fight with rattan sticks and buffalo skin shields—enquire locally about schedules. Air Terjun Jukut waterfall (Rp 20,000 entry) requires a 2-hour walk through rice paddies; guide services cost Rp 100,000-150,000. Taman Wisata Tetebatu (Monkey Forest) is a gentle 4-km walk north, featuring macaques and waterfalls. Local lore claims the Jukut waters cure baldness.

Kotaraja (5 km south) can be combined with visits to artisan workshops. The Monkey Forest is a pleasant 4-km walk north.

The falls are reached via a really pleasant two hour walk from Tetebatu through charming rice paddies. Less recommended is to drive to the main car park, from where the falls are 2 km down a well trodden walking track. Local Sasak lore has it that the waters here are a cure for baldness.
