Why go?

Senggigi is Lombok's primary tourist destination, strung along a 2-lane coastal road with distinct neighborhoods offering different vibes. The main draw is the west-facing beach perfect for sunset viewing, plus diving operations and easy access to the Gili Islands. Tourism has recovered after a subdued period, with new shops and ventures opening. The area serves as an ideal home base for day trips to waterfalls, traditional villages, and Mount Rinjani without the hassle of staying in Mataram.

Getting in

Senggigi lies 15-20 minutes north of Mataram (the island's capital) but more than an hour from the airport. Lombok International Airport (BIL/LOP) is near Praya in central south Lombok, about 50 km southeast of the Senggigi tourism precinct. The airport serves domestic flights and some international routes.

Getting around

Local transport consists of bemo minibuses during daylight hours and metered taxis like Lombok Taksi (Bluebird group) available throughout the area. Taxis or bemo can quickly connect Mangsit, Senggigi centre, and Batu Bolong. The coastal road to the north has been extensively upgraded and is now a popular scenic route.

Where to stay

Accommodation ranges from budget losmen to luxury resorts. Mangsit to the north has established resort hotels along a tranquil sweeping beach. Senggigi centre offers proximity to nightlife and restaurants. Batu Bolong has a smaller hotel strip feel. Budget options include Hotel Ray (Rp 100,000/night with breakfast), Raja's (around Rp 75,000/night), and Sonya Home Stay near Asmara restaurant. Mid-range includes Lina's (Rp 150,000-250,000), Sunset House Hotel (from Rp 400,000), and Qunci Villas Resort (US$80-275). Luxury options include Jeeva Klui, Kebun Villas (US$250-750), and Holiday Resort Lombok (US$67-102). Note: light sleepers should avoid lodging near mosques due to the loud call to morning worship.

Food and drink

Senggigi offers plenty of eating options with surprisingly good Western-style dishes, though local chefs often nail the names more than the recipes. Be cautious of promoters offering 10% discounts and free cocktails—always ask if VAT and service will be added to the bill. Local favorites include Warung Bamboo (right on the beach at Mangsit, local style menu at modest prices, BBQd fresh fish and squid). Windy Beach Cottages Restaurant offers varied Indonesian dishes with a full bar. Sunshine Restaurant has Chinese Indonesian owners with good value meals. Asmara provides European-influenced menu with live seafood tank. Square Restaurant and Lounge is the most stylish option (from Rp 30,000). Cafe Alberto in Batu Bolong serves Italian and Indonesian cuisine with pizza oven. For fine dining, Qerang Exquisite Seafood & Steaks at Qunci offers premium seafood and imported steaks (dinner only, reservations recommended).

Things to do

Most activities revolve around diving, snorkelling, and hiking. Blue Marlin Dive, DiveZone-Lombok, and Dream Divers Lombok operate professional diving operations. Eko in Mangsit offers personalized snorkelling trips with local knowledge. Mangsit beach surfing provides lessons for beginners and boat trips to Gili Islands. Pahrasat-Trekking Hutan offers Sasak-guided treks into kampungs and forest areas. Tour operators charge around Rp 350,000 for basic day trips including private car and driver, or Rp 800,000-1,000,000 for distant locations with a guide. Day trips include village visits (weaving villages, handicraft producers), waterfall visits in the north, and scenic drives along the upgraded coastal road.

See

Pura Batu Bolong, 2 km south of Senggigi, is a small Hindu temple on a scenic headland named after a rock with a hole. At the tip sits an empty chair representing Brahma. Free entry, though you'll need to borrow a sash (Rp 10,000) from local children if you don't have one. Sunsets here can be very impressive. Senggigi Beach is a spit of sand stretching from central Senggigi—the area's raison d'etre but not spectacular by Indonesian standards. The beach can be dirty and hawkers are a nuisance, but sunsets are beautiful and the peninsula promenade is pleasant. Kerangdangan beach is popular with Lombok residents on Sunday afternoons for swimming, satay, and socialising at beachfront warungs.

Buy

Lombok-style woodenware decorated with local creatures and geometrical patterns in black, brown, and red shades is sold in several shops. Boxes, bowls, and distinctive tall masks are inexpensive though potentially difficult to transport home. Be aware of your country's import regulations—Australia has strict rules requiring wood fumigation and inspection. Komodo freshwater pearls are pushed by persistent hawkers with starting prices around Rp 300,000 but available for as little as Rp 35,000. These are pretty costume jewellery but hawkers exploit misunderstandings of market value. Genuine Lombok pearls are available at specialty dealers. Senggigi Square and Senggigi Plaza are shopping locations. ATMs are plentiful along the main road.

Nightlife

Senggigi's nightlife suffers from far more supply than demand, with punters thinly spread and bars desperate for customers. Friday and Saturday nights see young crowds from Mataram adding life. Happy Cafe on Jl Raya has live bands Saturday nights (20:00-01:30) and draws local expats. Club 69 offers karaoke and nightclub entertainment with ladies encouraging customers to sing (20:00-02:00). Marina Cafe hosts professional live bands from Jakarta or Bandung monthly. Garden Café has live bands every night playing classics, old rock, and jazz with requests welcomed (19:00-00:30).

Connectivity

Senggigi has many WiFi hotspots in cafes, restaurants, and hotels, plus several internet cafes. 3G services are normally available though may fall back to EDGE and GPRS in some parts of town or at peak load times.

Go next

Senggigi is a launch point for Lombok adventures. Take a boat or ferry to the Gili Islands for snorkelling or diving. Climb Mount Rinjani, an active volcano (may be suspended during rainy season, normally reopens by April). Travel northward up the scenic coast road to Tanjung and Bayan. Visit Kuta and Tanjung A'an in Lombok's south.
