Why Go

Senaru is the primary gateway village for climbing Mount Rinjani, an active volcano and one of Indonesia's most popular trekking destinations. Beyond the arduous summit trek, the village offers spectacular scenery, two impressive waterfalls (Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep), and opportunities to experience traditional Sasak culture in the centuries-old traditional village. The area provides a quieter, more authentic alternative to Lombok's beach resorts, with excellent local food, affordable guesthouses, and stunning views of the volcano from almost everywhere.

Understand

Senaru sits at the foot of Mount Rinjani in North Lombok, approximately 1,500 meters above sea level. The nearby village of Batu Koq, about 1 km to the north, has almost merged with Senaru. The area is known for its lush tropical forests, rice terraces, and the cascading waterfalls that draw visitors even those not interested in volcano trekking. Local guesthouses and homestays offer simple but charming accommodations with views of Mount Rinjani.

Getting In

Most visitors arrive as part of a Mount Rinjani trekking package, which typically includes transportation from/to Bangsal, Senggigi, Mataram, and sometimes further. Independent travelers can reach Senaru by public bemo (minibus) from Mataram's terminal, though services are infrequent. The journey from Senggigi takes approximately 1.5-2 hours by motorbike or car. Taxis and online ride-hailing services (GoJek/Grab) can be arranged from Mataram.

Getting Around

Senaru is best explored on foot the village is compact and the scenery is spectacular. Most waterfalls and attractions are within 20-60 minutes walk from the village center. Many hotels and trek operators offer free transport to the waterfalls and other sites. Motorbike rental is available for reaching more distant attractions like the Ancak market or Pura Penataran Agung.

When To Go

The best time to visit Senaru is during the dry season from April to October, when trails are less slippery and waterfall flow is still strong. The rainy season (November to March) can make trails dangerous and some paths to waterfalls may be closed. The local market in Ancak operates every Thursday morning. Trekking permits for Mount Rinjani require booking through authorized operators.

Where To Stay

Senaru has a range of budget accommodations from Rp 70,000-150,000 for basic guesthouses with shared facilities to Rp 300,000-1,000,000 for more comfortable options with private bathrooms and hot water. Most guesthouses have simple cafes serving local food. Rinjani Golden offers rooms from Rp 150-200k with breakfast included and mountain views, while Rinjani Mountain Garden provides camping with swimming pool and hot showers from Rp 500,000-1,000,000 for a double room.

Things To Do

The main attractions are the Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls, accessible via a 20-minute to 1-hour walk from the village. Sendang Gile features a 50-meter cascade, while Tiu Kelep has a refreshing bathing pool. Visitors can explore the traditional Senaru village near the national park office, watch local stick fighting (peresean) which occurs twice weekly, or visit the Thursday morning market in Ancak. Day trips to the coffee and chocolate plantations along the road to the Rinjani geopark entrance are possible.

Do

Mount Rinjani trekking is the major activity but requires serious preparation and should not be taken lightly. For those not attempting the summit, there are numerous less demanding treks available, such as panorama walks or day trips to Senaru-Bayan. The area serves as an excellent base for exploring these local trails. A coffee plantation walk offers views over Tiu Kelep waterfall with a donation box for contribution.

Food And Drink

All local bungalows and homestays have simple cafes attached serving Sasak specialties. Simple warungs line the road between Senaru and Batu Koq villages. The local Sasak cuisine is excellent, featuring dishes like ayam tasak (spiced chicken), bebotel (beef in palm sugar sauce), and various curries served with nasi putih (white rice). Western dishes at tourist-oriented restaurants tend to be less impressive. Meals at local warungs cost around Rp 25,000-60,000.

Safety

Senaru is generally safe for travelers, though standard precautions apply. The trek to Tiu Kelep waterfall involves steep uphill sections, creek crossings, and rocky paths; appropriate footwear is essential and a trekking pole is useful. During rainy season, trails can become slippery and some paths may be closed. River crossings can become dangerous after heavy rain. Always inform your accommodation of your plans when hiking.

Go Next
