Why Go

Mataram is Lombok's largest city with 440,000 inhabitants (2023) and serves as the capital of West Nusa Tenggara province. Unlike tourist-oriented Senggigi or beach-focused Kuta, Mataram offers an authentic urban Indonesian experience with sprawling markets, local warungs, and the cultural blend of Sasak, Balinese, and Chinese communities. It functions as the island's main transport hub, making it essential for budget travelers navigating Lombok's attractions.

Understand

Mataram is an agglomeration of several villages that have merged into one urban area. The three main districts are Ampenan on the west coast (site of the old airport and harbor), Mataram in the center, and Cakranegara to the east (the commercial hub). This fragmented structure means the city sprawls across distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character.

Getting In

The most common way to reach Mataram is via Lombok International Airport (Bandara Internasional Zainuddin Abdul Majid) in Bangkes/Bl机场 near Ampenan, which handles domestic flights from Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bali. Alternatively, ferries from Bali arrive at Lembar port, about 30 km southwest. DAMRI buses run from Lembar port to Terminal Mandalika in Mataram for Rp35,000. Perama Tours and Travel operates offices across Indonesia including Bali and Lombok, offering land, sea, and air connections.

Get Around

Lombok Taksi is the most common taxi service in Mataram, available through the Bluebird Group app. For budget travel, angkot (shared minivans) serve routes throughout the city. DAMRI buses depart from Terminal Mandalika to destinations including Senggigi, Bangsal (for Gili Islands), and Lembar. Guided shopping tours can help navigate the maze-like markets of Mataram, Ampenan, and Cakranegara.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in Mataram ranges from budget guesthouses to mid-range hotels. Dewi Sri Guest House offers dorm beds at Rp150,000-175,000 with pool, hot water, and free amenities in the Selaparang area. Hastina Stylish Hotel near Epicentrum Mall has 6-bed capsule dorms at Rp125,000 with air conditioning and WiFi. Mid-range options include Lombok Raya Hotel (from US$23) near Mataram Mall and Grand Legi Hotel (from US$38) with pool, spa, and breakfast buffet.

Food and Drink

Mataram has a large number of restaurants, eating houses, and warungs serving traditional Indonesian and Lombok food, with variations including Chinese and Middle Eastern-influenced venues. Local specialties include ayam taliwang (famed at Dua Em Bersaudara, Jalan Transmigrasi No.99, open 08:00-22:00), bubur ayam (rice porridge Rp10,000-23,000 at Jl. Hos Cokroaminoto No.43), and sate (Rp20,000-25,000 for 10 sticks at Warung sate muslim, Jl. Hos Cokroaminoto No.32). Pizza is available at Blusky Pizza (Rp45,000-65,000) on Jalan Teratai. Restaurants serve local fruit juices, ginger tea, and kopi lombok (local coffee) at moderate prices. Public drinking of alcohol is not condoned in Lombok.

Things to Do

Mayura Park (Taman Mayura) at Jl. Purbasari 29 is a water palace built in 1744, site of battles between Dutch and Balinese forces in 1894, open 08:00-21:00 with Rp20,000 entry. Narmada Park, 10 km east of Mataram, served as the king's relaxation place with a Hindu temple, swimming pool, and "Youth Fountain" believed to grant long life; entry is cheap at around Rp4,000 (foreigners sometimes charged Rp10,000). The Lombok Museum (Museum Negeri Nusa Tenggara Barat) at Jl Panji Tilar Negara 6 exhibits geology, history, and culture of Lombok and Sumbawa, open various hours Monday-Saturday with Rp7,000 entry. Masjid Raya Hubbul Wathan (Islamic Center Mataram) features a dome combining Sasambo batik colors representing Sasak, Samawa, and Mbojo tribes. Cycling events are common on weekends, especially Sundays, attracting thousands of participants.

Buy

Cakranegara has the greatest concentration of retail outlets and a produce market, forming a maze of corridors with clothing, homeware vendors, and interesting small shops. Mataram Mall at Jl Pejanggik is Lombok's premier shopping mall with Hero supermarket, Tiara department store, McDonalds, KFC, and various shops. Epicentrum Mall at Jl. Sriwijaya No.333 is the newest and biggest mall in Mataram. Melissa Bakery at Jl Pejanggik offers cakes and bread with Redwood Cafe on the second floor. MGM Supermarket at Jl Arief Rachman Hakim spans two levels. Jalan Pejanggik transforms into an informal night market strip with street food vendors and tenda roadside eating venues. Jalan Udayana near the airport has warungs and food stalls popular at night, especially on weekends. Bargaining is essential in smaller shops and market areas; larger shops have fixed marked prices.

Safety

Mataram is generally safe for travelers but standard urban precautions apply. Be aware of food hygiene issues especially with some street vendors who may have limited access to water for cleaning utensils. Avoid Meru Temple south of Mayura Park which charges high entrance fees (Rp50,000 or more) as a scam. Markets and backstreets can be confusing; guided shopping tours are recommended for first-time visitors. The night market areas have low lighting but are not threatening, popular with couples for discreet socializing.

Connectivity

Indonesian mobile providers including Telkomsel, XL Axiata, and Indosat offer SIM cards with 4G coverage in Mataram. WiFi is available at most hotels, restaurants, and cafes. Power outlets use Type C and F plugs (European two-pin standard) with 230V at 50Hz.

Street food meals range from Rp10,000-30,000. Local transport via angkot or taxi within the city is Rp10,000-50,000. DAMRI bus to Lembar costs Rp35,000.
