Overview
Lombok combines Sasak cultural traditions with beaches and the Rinjani massif. Coastal snorkelling and northern waterfalls offer alternatives to a demanding mountain trek.

Why Go?
Lombok is often called "an unspoiled Bali" with beautiful beaches, enchanting waterfalls, and the looming Mount Rinjani volcano. Unlike crowded Bali, Lombok retains its traditional Sasak culture with virtually all small businesses run by local families. The island was awarded World's Best Halal Tourism Destination in 2016, making it particularly popular with Muslim travelers seeking halal options.

Getting In
Lombok International Airport (Bandara Internasional Lombok) is near Praya in central south Lombok, approximately 40 km south of Mataram and 55 km from Senggigi. The airport serves domestic flights from Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bali. By ferry, Lombok is connected to Bali at the western crossing and to Sumbawa at the eastern crossing via Labuhan Lombok.

Get Around
Bluebird taxis (light blue Toyota Vios, air-conditioned) offer 24-hour radio-dispatched service across the island. Express Taksi operates all-white Hyundai Excel vehicles. Airport Taxi provides metered journeys from the airport. Lombok has public transport in the form of bemo minibuses, though services are infrequent and routes can be confusing for visitors.

When to Go
The peak tourist season is May to August. While Lombok is tropical and hot, it is drier than neighboring Bali, making it attractive during the October-April rainy season when Bali receives heavy rainfall. When it does rain on Lombok, it rarely lasts more than an hour or two. The wet season brings brief afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours.

Where to Stay
Most better-quality accommodation is along the Senggigi strip north of the airport. The Gili Islands cater to younger travelers with a full range of hostels and budget options. Kuta is popular with surfers and eco-travelers seeking traditional village environments. The Sira and Medana area near Tanjung offers four resort-style hotels. Mataram has limited tourist accommodation, mostly concentrated in the Cakranegara/Sweta area. Note that rooms near mosques may be interrupted by dawn prayer calls.

Food and Drink
Ninety percent of Lombok's population is Muslim, so halal food is available almost everywhere except the Gili Islands and Senggigi. The best-known local dish is ayam taliwang, chicken coated with a rich red sauce flavored with galangal, turmeric, and tomato. Nasi campur (mixed rice) is the least expensive and most popular meal, typically including rice, vegetables, tofu or tempeh, and sambal chili paste. Warung (small local restaurants) offer budget meals throughout non-tourist areas. Tourist areas like Senggigi and the Gilis command higher prices with international cuisine options. Local drink tuak is fermented palm wine with 2-5% alcohol content.

Things to Do
Mount Rinjani in North Lombok is one of Indonesia's largest mountains at 3726m with breathtaking summit views, crater lake Segara Anak, and natural hot springs. Trekking packages are available but require adequate planning; Rinjani last erupted in May 2010. Snorkeling around the Gili Islands offers opportunities to swim with turtles. The Kuta area is a surfer's paradise with world-class waves. Traditional Sasak massage is offered on beaches and at hotels. Senaru's waterfalls include Air Terjun Sindang Gila, Air Terjun Tiu Kelep, and Air Terjun Betara Lenjang. Narmada Park near Mataram was the former relaxation place for royalty with a Hindu temple and swimming pool.

Stay Safe
Lombok is generally safe and stable, but travelers should take precautions. Travel in groups of two or more, especially for women and non-Indonesian speakers. In rural villages, people are often in bed by 20:00 with few people on the streets after dark—stay indoors in non-tourist areas at night. Lock zips on bags and avoid displaying conspicuous wealth like large amounts of cash or expensive electronics. Exercise extreme caution with local palm wine (tuak) due to reports of methyl alcohol adulteration causing serious illness.

Connectivity
Indonesian SIM cards are available throughout Lombok, with major providers offering 4G coverage in tourist areas and major cities. WiFi is commonly available in hotels, restaurants, and cafes in Senggigi and the Gili Islands. Remote areas, particularly in North Lombok near Mount Rinjani and rural villages, may have limited connectivity. Mataram and other urban centers have internet cafes.

Etiquette
Dress modestly in rural villages, religious sites, and government buildings—long pants for men, conservative clothing for women. Remove footwear when entering homes and sometimes business premises. Use your right hand for giving or receiving items; using the left hand is considered rude or disrespectful. Sarongs are essential—they serve as beach cover-ups, sun protection, and quick adaptation for dress code situations. Carry a sarong when visiting temples or local communities.

Go Next
Bali is the most popular onward destination with frequent ferry and flight connections. Sumbawa offers world-class surfing off the beaten track. Komodo and Flores are accessible by ferry for dragon-spotting and Komodo diving. Java (Surabaya and Jakarta), Makassar in Sulawesi, and international destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Singapore are all reachable by air.
