Overview
Sümeg is a small historic town in Veszprém County, Hungary, best known for its well-preserved 13th-century castle perched atop a 270-m limestone hill. The castle, one of Hungary's best maintained, offers panoramic views and occasional historical reenactments.

History
Sümeg became important in the 16th century when the bishop of Veszprém fled here during the Ottoman invasion. The castle was destroyed by the Habsburgs in 1713 to prevent further uprisings.
Transport
The train station is 1.8 km from the castle—budget 20-30 minutes for the walk uphill. Bus connections serve Budapest, Veszprém, and other regional cities.
Walking
The castle hill is closed to cars; expect a 400-m walk with 50 m elevation change to reach the entrance. Wear comfortable shoes.
