Why go?
Pucon is Chile's adventure capital, sitting at the base of Volcano Villarrica (2,861 m) with stunning views year-round. The town is backpacker-friendly with dozens of agencies offering volcano climbs, white-water rafting, hot springs, and trekking in Huerquehue National Park. January and February draw crowds, but shoulder seasons offer better prices and fewer people.

Getting there
Turbus runs 5 daily buses from Santiago (11 hr 30 min, 11,500-21,700 pesos). Jac offers twice-daily departures (9 hr 23 min). Both depart from Santiago's terminal. Book ahead during Chilean summer (Dec-Feb) as buses fill quickly. Local buses connect to Villarrica (20 min) and Temuco.

Getting around
Pucon is compact and walkable — most hostels, restaurants, and tour agencies are within 10 blocks of the central plaza. Taxis wait near the bus terminal and can take you to the ski area or volcano trailhead (around 5,000-8,000 pesos). Hitchhiking is common for volcano access. Minibuses to Villarrica leave throughout the day.

When to go
December to February is peak season with warm weather (20-30°C), full tour schedules, and vibrant nightlife. June to September brings ski season on Villarrica, with snowboarding and backcountry descents. Hot springs are enjoyable year-round but especially atmospheric in winter when snow surrounds the pools. April-May and September-October offer fewer crowds and lower prices.

Things to do
Climbing Volcano Villarrica is the highlight — thousands summit annually (2861 m), most in Jan-Feb. Self-guided climbers must register with CONAF (336 Lincoyán, M-F 08:30-18:30), show mountaineering membership proof, and have equipment checked. Guided climbs cost around and start at 05:00 or 07:00. Alternative: trek Quetrupillan (2,009 m) behind Villarrica for CLP$5,000 fee and fewer crowds. Skiing runs May-October at skipucon.cl with 4 chairs and 3 T-bar lifts (4,527-5,314 ft). Advanced skiers can hire guides to reach the volcano summit at 9,200 ft. Huerquehue National Park offers Araucaria forests and viewpoints — enter before 15:00. White-water rafting on Trancura River ranges from beginner (Trancura Bajo, class III) to advanced (Trancura Alto, class IV).

Go next
Villarrica (20 min by minibus) has 46,000 residents and fewer tourist traps — good for a quieter base. For larger cities, head to Concepción or Valdivia via Turbus. The lake district circuit works well: Pucon → Villarrica → Panguipulli → Liquiñe hot springs → coastal Chiloé if heading south.

Safety
Pucon is generally safe for travelers. Exercise normal urban precautions in the central area at night. Volcano climbing requires proper gear and checking weather — guides won't ascend after 14:00. River rafting operators should provide safety equipment. Avoid stray dogs near the bus terminal. Road safety is a concern on mountain passes — buses drive carefully but private vehicles may not.

Connectivity
Most hostels offer free WiFi. Tour agencies and restaurants have WiFi for customers. Mobile coverage (Entel, Claro, WOM) works throughout town and along main roads. SIM cards available in town if needed. Power plugs use Type C/L (European two-pin) standard.
