Overview
Opatija is the principal resort town on Croatia's Liburnia riviera, a 13 km stretch of coast southwest of Rijeka. Known as the 'Croatian Cannes', it rose to prominence in the mid-1800s when Austro-Hungarian nobility built opulent hotels and villas along the shore.

Culture
Opatija means 'abbey' in Croatian; the town grew around St. Jacob's abbey. July 25th is the city holiday celebrating St. Jacob, the patron saint of travellers. The Austro-Hungarian heritage is visible in Belle Époque architecture, historic villas, and grand hotels.
Etiquette
As a resort town, dress codes are casual in summer but smart-casual for evening dining and cultural venues. Beach attire should be confined to the waterfront.
Transport
Bus 32 connects Opatija with Rijeka (20 min, €4 return from Tisak shops). Direct buses to Zagreb (€16–19, 3 hr), Pula (€10, 2 hr), and Trieste (€7.50, 2 hr). Train station is in Matulji, requiring a bus connection.
Weather
Summer brings crowds and higher prices; population swells from 7,850 to tens of thousands. Spring and autumn offer milder weather, thinner crowds, and better rates for accommodation.
