Why Go?

Muang Xay is the largest city in Northern Laos and a crucial transit hub between China and Vietnam, meaning most overland travelers will pass through. The town sits in the Nam Ko River Basin surrounded by scenic mountains and combines Lao, Chinese, and Khmu cultural influences. It's the gateway to the region's biggest cave (Chom Ong Cave), traditional Khamu villages, and Nam Kad Waterfall.

Getting In

Muang Xay is primarily reached by bus via the new bus station (listing UID: 9867a564d86704db). Destinations include Luang Prabang, Nong Khiaw, Pak Beng, Meuang La, Phongsaly, and Vientiane. International buses from China serve the Kunming to Luang Prabang route, stopping opposite Sinphet Restaurant. A bus to Kunming costs 350,000 kip, taking 3 hours to the border and another 11 hours to Kunming. Buy provincial bus tickets one hour in advance.

Getting Around

The town is small enough to be navigated entirely on foot. The Tourist Information Centre (two doors from the central bridge) offers motorbike and bicycle rentals. The article notes that as of 2025, bike or motorbike rental through other providers may no longer be available in Oudomxay.

When to Go

For Phu That Stupa, visit during full moon religious celebrations. Markets are most colorful on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The Nam Kad Waterfall approach crosses rivers 5-6 times, which may be difficult in rainy season. Go to Phou Sebey mountain early in the morning for the best views as the town wakes up.
