Why Go

Luang Namtha is the largest city in Luang Namtha Province, Northern Laos, best known as a stopover on the backpacker trail from China to Laos and as a premier trekking base. The town offers access to the Luang Namtha National Protected Area with hill tribe treks, and serves as a quieter alternative to the cramped boat journey between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang. While short on jaw-dropping sights, it provides a compact, pleasant base with trekking companies, banks, and guesthouses concentrated in the new town area.

Understand

The town is divided into two parts: the old town near the airport (bombed during the 1970s) now considered a village on Hwy 3, and the new town on Hwy 17A where trekking companies, banks, government offices, and most guesthouses are located. The two areas are about 6 km apart. The de facto town center is easily walkable, with motorbike rentals available for exploring surrounding villages like Muang Nalae, Vieng Phouka, and Muang Sing.
