Overview
Msambweni is a tranquil alternative to the tourist-packed Diani Beach, just 30 minutes away by car. This cluster of ten villages with about 12,000 inhabitants offers genuine African coastal life: coconut palms, mango trees, and sugar cane plantations stretch behind long empty beaches.

Before you go
Accommodation
Only four small hotels exist; book ahead. Two mid-range options are north of the County Hospital; two upscale hotels are on the southern beach. Holiday homes available.
Connectivity
Get a Kenyan SIM card (Safaricom recommended) for mobile data. Village has limited internet options; Diani Beach has more connectivity infrastructure.
Culture
Msambweni is a predominantly Muslim community. Dress modestly off the beach. Weekend weddings with live tarab music are public and travelers are welcome.
Food
Local restaurants and street kitchens are cheap but limited. Hotels have restaurants that require advance registration. No tourist-oriented restaurants exist.
Safety
Msambweni is exceptionally safe for travelers. Even alone and at night, there are no safety concerns. Beach hawkers are the only minor nuisance.
Transport
Budget travelers should use the matatu-boda-boda combination: Mombasa to Msambweni junction for 150 KSh, then 100 KSh by motorcycle to the beach. Full taxi from Mombasa costs 5,500 KSh.
