Why Go

Khajuraho is a small temple town in Madhya Pradesh's Bundelkhand region, famous for its groups of Hindu and Jain temples that form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temples are adorned with beautiful and erotic rock carvings depicting Kama Sutra scenes—an artistic tradition unique in the world. Set against the Vindhya mountain range backdrop, Khajuraho offers a fascinating counterpoint to India's more crowded tourist circuits, with the added draw of the annual Khajuraho Dance Festival each February.

Understand

Khajuraho's art represents a manifestation of Indian aesthetic philosophy. The erotic sculptures depicting Kama Sutra are unique in the world—these works of the Chandela dynasty congeal in stone a lyrical paean to love and passion. The temples are not merely erotic sculptures; they house some of the most revered gods of Hinduism, representing Indo-Aryan architecture at its finest.

When to Go

Khajuraho's climate is extreme with wide variation between day and night temperatures and minimal rainfall. Summers reach 45°C, making them difficult for sightseeing, while winters are pleasant at 27°C. Annual rainfall is only 14 cm. The best time to visit is September to March, with the Khajuraho Dance Festival held each February (1st-7th).
