Why go?
Orchha is a tiny medieval town in Madhya Pradesh that seems frozen in time, its 16th-century Bundela Rajput palaces and temples still retaining their original grandeur. Founded by chieftain Rudra Pratap as the capital of one of Central India's most powerful kingdoms, Orchha ("hidden") offers travelers a rare glimpse into Mughal-era architecture without the crowds of major tourist destinations. The compact settlement lets you wander between the fort complex, riverside cenotaphs, and intricate temples on foot, while budget accommodations and cheap auto-rickshaws keep costs low.

Getting in
Orchha is accessed via Jhansi railway station in Uttar Pradesh, 15 km away. From Agra, Delhi, or Gwalior, take a train to Jhansi, then hire an auto-rickshaw (₹500, 40 minutes) or car (20 minutes). Cheaper options include shared shuttle auto-rickshaws from the train station (₹10 to bus stand, then ₹20 per person to Orchha). The Orchha railway station itself sees only two daily passenger trains (229A/230A) with stops at 4:45PM from Jhansi and connections to Khajuraho. Drivers at Jhansi station quoted ₹500 in 2025.

Getting around
The village is small enough to walk just about anywhere. For longer distances or when tired, a rickshaw can take you around for ₹50 (2025). Shared auto-rickshaws also operate on fixed routes for ₹10-20 per person.

When to go
The best time to visit Orchha is October to March when temperatures are mild (15-25°C). Summer (April-June) can be extremely hot, exceeding 40°C. The monsoon season (July-September) brings heavy rains that may affect travel on unpaved paths. Winter mornings can be chilly, especially for early temple visits.

Where to stay
Orchha has budget guesthouses near the palace entrance and mid-range options along the riverside. Temple View Guesthouse offers clean rooms with courtyard and free Wi-Fi/chai for ₹200-300. Gantapi Guesthouse at the north end provides decent rooms with hot water for ₹600. For splurging, Sheesh Mahal occupies a beautifully restored palace (₹2000-5000), while Bundeli Kothi offers air-conditioned countryside views with vegetarian meals (₹4500-5500).

Food and drink
Small street restaurants near the palace entrance serve inexpensive Indian, Asian, and Western cuisine. Indiana Restaurant on the waterfront offers good food with friendly staff (₹200-300). Grace of India on Jhansi Road is family-run with a signature potato dish and excellent chai (₹150-250). Krishna Palace View Roof Top Restaurant provides palace views with dishes from ₹10-100. Alcohol is expensive due to steep Madhya Pradesh taxes—expect to pay around ₹300 for restaurant beer. A liquor shop exists in the main market but selection is limited.

Things to do
Start at the Fort Complex (₹50 for Indians, ₹750 for foreigners + ₹400 camera fee) which issues an all-day ticket covering all sights. Key palaces include the 17th-century Jehangir Mahal with its chhatris and trellis work, Rai Parveen Mahal honoring the poetess-paramour of Raja Indramani, and Raj Mahal with vivid religious murals. The 14 riverside Cenotaphs (Chhatris) offer rooftop views of the Betwa (₹100 tip for stairs). Ram Raja Mandir is the spiritual center of town—note no photography allowed. The Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary (₹30 entry) features a 6-km hike to a watchtower with panoramic views, open daily 7AM-6PM.

Fake antique coins are sold in the market near Ram Raja temple—verify authenticity before purchasing. Monkey troops in the wildlife sanctuary can be aggressive; do not feed them.
