Overview

Jabalpur is an ancient city in central India on the shores of the holy Narmada River, known for the Marble Rocks at Bhedaghat. The city served as capital of the Gond Kings in the 12th century and later the seat of the Kalchuri dynasty.

Why Go

Jabalpur is an ancient city in central India on the shores of the holy Narmada River, known for the stunning Marble Rocks at Bhedaghat where the river flows between coloured marble formations for nearly 2 kilometres. The city served as capital of the Gond Kings in the 12th century and later the seat of the Kalchuri dynasty, leaving behind forts and temples. Vinoba Bhave called it Sanskar Dhani for its cosmopolitan character and communal harmony, with populations from Bengal, Gujarat, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and South India living together.

Jabalpur is well connected by air, train and road. The Jabalpur Railway Station serves as a major hub. Taxis are available at the station for onward travel to nearby attractions.

Get Around

Cycle rickshaws are by far the most common means of transportation inside the city. You can rent a taxi to go to places like Bhedaghat, Bandhavgarh and Kanha, available at the Railway Station or hotels.

When To Go

The best time to visit Jabalpur is September to March. Summers should be avoided due to extreme heat reaching 41°C in May. The monsoon season from July to September brings heavy rainfall (443 mm in August) but can be beautiful if you have good accommodation. Boat rides at Bhedaghat are suspended during monsoon months.

Jabalpur hosts cuisines from across India due to its cosmopolitan population. The Chowpatti in Civic Centre offers low-cost street food including Bhelpuri, Chowmein, and Pav Bhaaji. A famous Parathewali aunty near platform 4 entrance serves delicious parathas. Haji Basheer hotel opposite Coffee House Sadar offers mutton samosas and shami kebabs. For Indian-Chinese food, try Clock Tower and Kamling. Night vendors near Fuhara serve Lassi, Rabri, and Khova Jalebi at Badkul, 471 Jawahar Ganj.

Things To Do

The Marble Rocks at Bhedaghat, 25 km from Jabalpur, are best explored by boat with shared rides at ₹100 per head or chartered six-seater boats at ₹800. Dhuandhar Falls, 25 km away, can be viewed from ropeway at ₹75 per head. The Balancing Rock is a famous volcanic rock formation that survived a magnitude 6.5 earthquake. Madan Mahal Fort built by Gond ruler Raja Madan Shah in 1116 offers panoramic views. The Chausat Yogini Temple atop a hill provides views of the Marble Rocks gorge.

Jabalpur serves as the gateway to several major destinations. Bandhavgarh National Park (164 km) has the highest tiger density in the world where the white tiger was discovered. Khajuraho (257 km) features UNESCO-listed temples. Kanha National Park (165 km) is one of India's biggest tiger reserves and inspired the Jungle Book. Pench National Park (172 km) is known for tiger spotting. Pachmarhi (244 km) is a hill station in the Satpura Range.
