Why go?
Chiclayo is one of the liveliest cities in northern Peru, with a population of around 609,000 (2022). It is big enough to have supermarkets and small enough to be manageable without hours spent in city buses. The plazas like Parque Principal and Plazuela Elias Aguirre buzz with life even after sunset. The city serves as the main gateway to the Moche and Lambayeque cultural treasures, including the world-renowned Sipan Museum.

Getting in
Chiclayo is served by Aeropuerto Internacional de FAP Capitan Jose A. Quinones Gonzalez (CIX), located on Av Fitzcarrald at the eastern edge of town. LATAM and Star Peru operate flights. For ground transport, major bus companies including Transportes Linea offer services to Trujillo (3 hours), Lima (11 hours), and onward connections. Movil Tours provides routes to Chachapoyas and Tarapoto.

Getting around
Chiclayo is full of Tico taxis. Short journeys cost S/3. Colectivos (shared sedan taxis taking 4 passengers) and combis (8-12 seater small vans) serve nearby destinations. Mototaxis (three-wheeler motor rickshaws) cost about half the price of regular taxis. Routes to Lambayeque and Ferrefeafe cost S/15 by taxi or S/3 by combi from Terminal Epsel.

When to go
Chiclayo has a desert climate with temperatures ranging from 16-31°C throughout the year. The warmest months are December-March (summer), while June-August are cooler. Rainfall is minimal year-round, with August-October being the driest period. The best time to visit is during the dry season from April to November.

Where to stay
Budget accommodation options include Alojamiento Z on Mariscal Castilla 118, near Cruz del Sur bus terminal, with rooms from S/25 per night. Mid-range options include Casa de la Luna and the Wyndham Costa del Sol Chiclayo on Av Balta 399. Hotels and thieves are concentrated centrally near the bus terminals, so remain vigilant with valuables.

Food and drink
Local markets offer affordable dining options. The Witch Market in the market quarters (around Arica #950) offers traditional remedies and local snacks. Fiesta Chiclayo Gourmet on Av. Salaverry 1820 provides mid-range dining. Street food vendors in the plaza areas serve ceviche and regional specialties.

Things to do
The Museo Tumbas Reales de Sipan in Lambayeque (S/10 entry) features treasures from the Lord of Sipan's tombs with replicas of the grave and discovery artifacts. The Huaca Rajada archaeological complex marks the Lord of Sipan's funeral site with truncated pyramids, reachable by combi to Sipan (S/6) then mototaxi. Tucume contains 26 pyramids built by ancient Peruvians, 32 km north, with combis from Ovalo del Pescador (S/6). The Sican Museum in Ferrefeafe displays remains from the Sican culture discovered in 1987.

Safety
The area around bus companies, hotels, and in the city center has thieves. Do not flash valuables or take photos openly when walking around this area. Pimentel beach area is reported to be unsafe with travelers robbed in broad daylight. Mercado Modelo is crowded and poses pickpocketing risk. Use registered taxis rather than hailing on the street.

Budget
Budget travelers can get by on S/80-120 per day including dorm accommodation (S/25-50), meals at markets (S/10-20 per meal), and local transport (S/3-6 per journey). Archaeological site entry fees are reasonable at S/6-10. Longer taxi rides to nearby sites cost S/15-20.

Day trips
Chiclayo is an ideal base for exploring northern Peruvian archaeological sites. The Pomac Forest Historical Sanctuary features ancient trees and archaeological remains, reachable by combi from Terminal Epsel for S/8. The Sicán Museum is 18 km north in Ferrefeafe, accessible by combi (S/3) then mototaxi (S/2). The Sipan tombs excavation site is 30 km out of town.

Go next
Transportes Linea operates hourly buses to Trujillo (3 hours) continuing to Lima (11 hours). Movil Tours offers routes to the Amazon gateway cities of Chachapoyas and Tarapoto. From here, travelers can continue south along the coast or venture inland to the highlands and ruins of Chan Chan.
