Getting In
Moyobamba has no functioning airport, so all access is by road. Buses from Lima take 24 hours and cost around S/120 (soles). The fastest approach is flying from Lima to Tarapoto with LAN Peru or LC Perú, then taking a 2-hour taxi (S/25) or bus (S/20) to Moyobamba. Alternatively, you can arrive from Iquitos via boat to Yurimaguas, then bus or taxi to Tarapoto and onward to Moyobamba.

Getting Around
Moyobamba is compact enough to explore on foot, but most visitors use moto-taxis (modified motorbikes with three wheels and a carriage for three passengers). Most moto-taxi journeys cost S/2.00. Be aware that some drivers may try to charge tourists more, so always agree on the price before boarding.

When To Go
The San Juan Festival on June 24th is a major local celebration featuring traditional dances and dishes. The road from Tarapoto to Moyobamba offers breathtaking views of the Amazon basin. Travelers prone to motion sickness should be aware that the winding mountain roads can be challenging.

Things To Do
The San Martín Museum (Jr. Oscar R. Benavides 380) displays orchids (approximately 2,500 species in the region), fossils, and traditional clothing. Vivero Agro Oriente features orchid exhibits with guided tours for S/2 entrance fee, plus views of the Mayo river and wildlife including alligators and boas. The Morro de Calzada in the town of Calzada offers a 2-3 hour moderate hike to summit views of the entire valley for a S/15 fee. Nearby waterfalls include Gera Waterfalls in Jepelacio (20-minute walk from village) and Lahuarpia Waterfalls on the road to Tarapoto with 3 waterfalls.

Go Next
Tarapoto is the largest city in the region, accessible by a scenic 2-hour bus or taxi ride. Rioja lies to the west of Moyobamba. Chiclayo requires an overnight bus trip that crosses the Andes, descending from the lush Amazon basin into the arid Pacific coast of northern Peru — travelers should try to sleep during this winding journey.
