Overview
Haad Rin is a beach settlement shaped by the Full Moon Party. The days around the event bring a much busier nightlife scene than the intervening weeks.
Languages: Thai
Why Go
Haad Rin draws tens of thousands monthly for the famous Full Moon Party - one of Asia's most iconic beach parties. The other 27 days between full moons offer a quieter scene with pool parties, jungle parties, and the relaxed island atmosphere of Ko Pha Ngan. Budget travelers find cheap accommodation, 150-200 baht local spirit buckets, and 24/7 food options, though the party scene dominates everything.

Getting In
Ferries arrive at Haad Rin pier from Ko Samui and Ko Tao. The steep road up to Haad Rin from the pier is a characteristic first impression. Resorts can arrange minibus, songthaew, or motorbike transfers from the pier to your accommodation.

Getting Around
Haad Rin is compact and walkable, though motorbike hire is widely available for reaching resorts on the headland. The hills are steep and may challenge inexperienced riders. Songthaews and motorbike taxis serve the area.

When to Go
The Full Moon Party occurs once monthly - check the lunar calendar for exact dates. The 3-4 nights before the full moon are considered by many to offer better parties than the main event, as they are less crowded. Hotels book out up to a week before Full Moon and Half Moon parties; many require a 5-night minimum stay during peak periods.

Where to Stay
Accommodation ranges from basic 300 baht bungalows to 2,500 baht beachfront resorts. Up to a week before major parties, hotels in Haad Rin and surrounding areas sell out completely. The more comfortable places go first. Consider staying outside Haad Rin and taxiing in - rooms on the other side of the island are cheaper and quieter. Safety deposit boxes exist at many resorts but theft from them has been reported.

Food and Drink
Haad Rin packs in both small and large open-air restaurants serving Thai and Western food. Street food is available all night and several beachfront restaurants operate 24/7. The most popular drinking format is "buckets" - a pint of alcohol with ice and mixer in a small bucket, sold at beach and street stands. Local spirits Sangsom and Hong Thong buckets cost 150-200 baht; premium options reach 400 baht.

Things to Do
Beyond the party scene, jet ski rental is available on the beach (though scam warnings exist - owners may falsely accuse renters of damage and demand up to 90,000 baht). Banana boat rides offer hard and fast thrills. The 3-4 days before full moon feature multiple nightly parties at different locations including the famous Jungle Party and Pool Party.

Safety
Theft is common during Full Moon Party periods - many bungalows are broken into and valuables stolen. Use your own padlock where possible, or stay at higher-end resorts. Drug purchases from street touts (often undercover police or working with police) result in on-the-spot fines of 5,000-10,000 baht or arrest. Drugs can be purchased at certain established locations without street touts, but this remains illegal.

Day Trips
Ko Samui is accessible by boat for day trips or as an alternative base if Haad Rin accommodation is sold out. Ko Tao, known for diving, is another nearby island option.

Go Next
Ferries connect Haad Rin to Ko Samui (for beaches and nightlife) and Ko Tao (for diving and snorkeling). Both islands offer different atmospheres from Haad Rin's party focus.
