Why go?

Chaweng is the largest and most popular beach on Ko Samui, with 7 km of powdery white sand and emerald waters. It attracts young travellers and families alike, offering good value for money and a vibrant nightlife. The beach is divided into North, Central, and Chaweng Noi (south).

Getting in

Chaweng is a few minutes ride south of Samui Airport. A taxi from the airport costs 400 baht (booked at desk), or a shared van for 120 baht per person. Negotiate with taxi drivers for 200-400 baht. Motorcycle taxis cost 30-150 baht depending on distance. Motorbike rentals are available for 100-200 baht per day. Car rentals start at 800 baht per day.

Getting around

The beach is accessed through hotels as there are no beach roads. Motorbike taxis (30-150 baht) and rented motorbikes (100-200 baht/day) are common. Car rentals cost from 800 baht per day. Established companies like Avis and Hertz offer insurance. Drive carefully as accidents are frequent.

Where to stay

Chaweng is the heart of Ko Samui. Backpacker bungalows are virtually non-existent, replaced by modern hotels. Budget options under 1,000 baht include Baan Chaweng Resort (400-1,500 baht), Chaweng Beach Backpackers Hostel (dorm 250 baht), and Coconut House (600 baht). Mid-range (1,000-2,500 baht) and splurge (over 2,500 baht) options are abundant. Always ask to see the room first.

Food and drink

Downtown Chaweng is full of restaurants and bars. Budget Thai food at Ninja (from 100 baht) and Cloud Restaurant & Bar (Thai from 100 baht, Western from under 200 baht). Seafood grills at Sea Food Centre. Nightlife centers on Soi Green Mango and Soi Reggae, with clubs like Green Mango Club, Bar Solo, and Reggae Pub. Ark Bar Beach Club hosts beach parties with fireworks Wed/Fri.

Things to do

Most activities are on the beach. Dive shops like Calypso Diving and 100 Degrees East offer PADI courses and trips to Ko Tao and Ang Thong National Marine Park. Snorkelling and kayaking at nearby islands. Beach vendors sell food, crafts, and souvenirs. Walking to the nearest island at low tide is possible.

Safety

Motorbike accidents are a regular occurrence on Ko Samui, so drive carefully and wear a helmet. The nightclub area is near beach hotels; be aware if seeking quiet. Bar girls are present but less pushy than elsewhere. Bargaining is expected in shops.
