Did you know?

  1. About 30 bars and restaurants occupy just 700 metres of village street.
  2. Old Chinese shophouses in Fisherman's Village have become restaurants and cafés.
  3. Beatles Bar serves cocktails from a renovated teak shophouse.

Why Go

Bophut is one of the few places on Samui that retains its original Thai-Chinese atmosphere, standing apart from the more commercial chaos of nearby Chaweng. The traditional Fisherman's Village features old Chinese shop-houses converted into restaurants and cafés, while the beach offers about 2 km of white sandy shoreline fringed by coconut palms. Unlike other Samui hotspots, Bophut has consciously avoided girly bars, instead targeting couples and young families seeking a more refined beach experience.

Get In

Bophut is approximately 15 minutes from Samui Airport by bus or taxi. Many ferries from Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao dock at the small pier in east Bophut. From Nathon pier, take a brown songthaew going north (to the left as you leave) for around 50 baht—the locals' preferred mode of island transport. Do not ask a fare or you will be charged for a private hire; push the button to signal the driver when you want to stop and pay on exit.

Get Around

Bophut is compact enough to explore on foot, with the Fisherman's Village's restaurants, bars, and shops clustered within 700 m of village street. Songthaews (shared pickup trucks) serve the wider island routes, or guests can hire motorbikes from numerous rental shops along the main road. The beach itself is narrow and drops off rapidly, making it better for relaxing than swimming.

When to Go

Bophut can be visited year-round, though the water is often murky especially around December. The dry season from February to April offers the best beach conditions. Peak season runs from December through March when European visitors escape winter. Bophut is famed for its sunsets, making evening beach strolls a daily highlight regardless of season.

Where to Stay

Accommodation ranges from budget bungalows to luxury resorts. The Fisherman's Village offers beachfront options like The Lodge (1,500 baht) with views of Ko Pha Ngan, while Eden Bungalows (1,190-1,990 baht) features a small pool and garden. Higher-end options include Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort (from US$158) and Zazen Boutique Resort and Spa (from 5,600 baht). Many accommodations in the high season require 7-night minimum stays.

Food and Drink

Bophut has a reputation as one of the best eating destinations on Samui, with about 30 bars and restaurants in just 700 m of village street. Cuisine options include French (La Sirene), Italian (Villa Bianca, widely regarded as the island's best at around 500 baht per head with wine), Thai seafood (Happy Elephant where most fish cost 50 baht per 100 grams), and British/Australian pub fare. Two bakeries serve European-style snacks. The beachside Starfish and Coffee offers romantic dining with reclining divans and oil lamps. For drinks, Beatles Bar serves cheap cocktails in a renovated teak shop-house, while Frog & Gecko hosts quiz nights on Wednesdays.

Things to Do

Activities center on the beach, where calm bay waters are ideal for relaxing rather than vigorous swimming. Jet ski hire operators are mercifully located at the west end of Fisherman's Village. A go-kart track can be found on the main road adjacent to the village. Thai massage and spa treatments are popular bargain options available on the beach or in village spas. The area is famous for its sunsets, and the beachfront bars provide perfect vantage points.

Buy

The Fisherman's Village features small trendy shops selling unique items. Samui Footwear offers reasonably priced leather shoes with original designs and shoe repairs. Sari stocks bottled orchids from Bangkok, hand-carved amulets, silver jewellery from around Asia, handbags from India, China and Malaysia, and designer clothes from Hong Kong, open 16:00-22:00.

Go Next

From Bophut, nearby destinations include Bang Rak, Choeng Mon, and Mae Nam on the north coast, while Chaweng's nightlife is a short journey south. The southern beaches of Lamai, the capital Nathon, and the quieter Samui South Coast are easily reached by songthaew or motorbike. Laem Yai on the northwest coast offers a different perspective of the island.

Safety

Bophut is generally a safe area targeting families and couples, with no girly bars to attract associated problems. Standard beach safety applies—the water drops off rapidly and is better for wading than swimming. Jet ski operators are concentrated at the west end of Fisherman's Village to minimize accidents near swimmers.
