Overview
Celaya is a mid-sized industrial city of 378,000 people in Guanajuato state, ranking third after León and Guanajuato capital. It is best known for its artisanal cajeta (milk candy made in copper saucepans) and distinctive colonial architecture including the 1609 Temple of San Agustín with Plateresque decoration.

Safety
Celaya has extreme safety concerns. In 2020 it had Mexico's highest homicide rate (109 per 100,000). Avoid going out at night; many stores close before midnight.
Transport
Walking works well in el centro. Uber and taxis are available. The city is 50 km west of Querétaro and 260 km from Mexico City.
