Getting in

Querétaro Intercontinental Airport (AIQ) serves domestic routes via TAR Aerolíneas and limited US connections. The city sits 213 km northwest of Mexico City, 63 km southeast of San Miguel de Allende, and 200 km south of San Luis Potosí. Central de Autobuses handles intercity bus connections across Mexico.

Get around

Local buses and collective taxis serve the city. The historic center is walkable. ATMs are available 24/7 at BanCoppel locations in the southwest center, with additional options from BanBajío, Banco Azteca, Banca Mifel, Citibanamex, and Santander throughout.

When to go

The climate chart shows dry season from November through April with minimal rainfall (3.6-15.3mm monthly). Rainy season runs May-October with peaks in July (130.8mm) and August (84.9mm). Temperatures range from 23°C in December-January to 30.7°C in May. The dry winter months offer the most comfortable sightseeing weather.

Budget options cluster in the centro histórico. Jirafa Roja Hostel offers dorms from M$230 (April 2022) including breakfast. Hotel Corregidora provides basic 2-star rooms with private bathroom from M$250 weekdays, M$350 weekends (Jan 2022). Meson de Carolina in a Colonial-era building costs from M$580 (Jan 2022). Food and drink

The signature dish is Gordita Queretana, a larger round variation stuffed with meat or cheese for M$30, or both for M$45 at street food stalls (Jan 2022). Boyo's Pizza offers two slices for M$29 or two hot dogs for M$25 (Dec 2021). Athéntica Comida China serves rice or spaghetti with one protein for M$65 (Dec 2021). Tamales Penamiller in Centro Historico opens Friday-Saturday 19:00-23:30 with handmade tamales from Sierra Gorda including goat cheese and regional varieties.

Things to do

The Centro Histórico encompasses Cerro del Sangremal crowned by the Convent of Holy Cross and extends to Cerro de las Campanas where Emperor Maximilian I was executed in 1867. Teatro de la República hosted Maximilian's trial, the 1917 Constitution drafting, and first national anthem performance. Palacio del Gobierno (Casa de la Corregidora) was where Doña Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez warned Miguel Hidalgo of the Independence plot. The iconic 74-column aqueduct dominates the cityscape.

Go next

Day trips include Bernal (60 km), Tequisquiapan (60 km), and Ranas (50 km) for colonial charm and hot springs. San Miguel de Allende lies 70 km away. Wine enthusiasts can explore the growing vineyards region with Freixenet as the flagship producer. Mexico City is 213 km southeast for those continuing the central Mexico circuit.
