Overview
Cañada de la Virgen is an Otomi archaeological site built around 540 AD as an astronomical observatory, reaching its peak around 900 AD before being abandoned by 1040. The site features three primary pyramids with architecture precisely aligned to the sun, moon, and Venus—including a 18-degree tilt to key platforms that allowed the Otomi to track solstices and planting/harvest dates.
