Overview
Zao Onsen is a hot spring town nestled in the Zao Mountains (蔵王連峰) famous for its cloudy blue sulfuric water. In winter, the area transforms into Tohoku's largest ski resort and hosts the famous "Snow Monsters" (樹氷 juhyō) - snow-covered trees that look like strange creatures.

Money
Japan uses yen (JPY). Cash is commonly used at smaller establishments and hot springs. Credit cards accepted at larger hotels.
Transport
Zao Onsen has no train station. Take a bus from Yamagata Station (40 min, roughly hourly). The town is walkable once you arrive.
Weather
Winter brings heavy snow and "Snow Monsters" (December-March). Summer and autumn are milder, ideal for hiking to Zao Crater.
