Before you go
Accommodation
Ryokan (traditional Japanese inns) with hot spring baths are the primary accommodation type. Book in advance, especially during peak winter season and Japanese holidays.
Culture
Yamanouchi offers authentic onsen culture. Many ryokan have tattoo policies—check before booking if you have tattoos. Public baths typically require showering before entering.
Money
Japan is largely cash-based in rural areas. Carry sufficient yen as credit cards are not widely accepted at smaller establishments. ATMs at post offices and convenience stores (7-Eleven) accept foreign cards.
Transport
The Nagano-Dentetsu line connects Nagano to Yudanaka Station in 45 minutes (¥1210). Buses from Yudanaka go to the monkey park area. The area is best explored on foot or by local bus.
Weather
Winters are cold with heavy snowfall (ideal for seeing bathing monkeys). Summers are mild and pleasant. Dress in layers and bring waterproof footwear for winter visits.
