Overview
Wulingyuan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring thousands of towering sandstone karst pillars covered in sub-tropical rainforest, often shrouded in atmospheric fog. The park's otherworldly scenery reportedly inspired James Cameron when designing the floating mountains in Avatar—officials even renamed one peak "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain." Unlike crowded domestic tourist spots, venturing onto minor tracks means you'll often hike alone through pristine landscape.

Before you go
Accommodation
Hotels in Zhangjiajie Cun and Suoxiyu Cun range from ¥88/night budget guesthouses to mid-range options. Staying inside the park is no longer possible as all accommodations were demolished in 2019.
Food
Hunan spicy cuisine dominates. Street vendors sell eggs (¥3), tofu (¥10), and cucumbers (¥10). Inside-park restaurants have inflated prices—bargaining expected. Eat outside park entrance for better value.
Money
Park tickets (¥115-227 depending on season) include free internal bus rides. Extra fees apply for cable cars and the Bailong elevator (¥65-72 each). Payment accepted in cash, WeChat Pay, Alipay, or international Visa/MasterCard.
Safety
Steep cliffs exist throughout the park but are protected by railings on official trails. Those afraid of heights should stick to roads or take boat cruises. Winter trails can be slippery.
Transport
Reaching Wulingyuan: bus from Zhangjiajie central bus station costs ~¥12 (45-60 min). Taxis charge ~¥100. Within the park, free buses connect the two main gates.
Weather
Summers are humid with temperatures from 18°C to 30°C in a single day. Winter brings occasional snow but slippery walkways. Fog is common year-round, adding atmosphere but potentially obscuring views.
